To give you a sense of how our Learning Guides can be used by teachers as lesson plans and by parents to supplement school curriculum or for homeschooling, we have set out below is a paragraph from the Learning Guide to Fort Apache. Cochise (died 1874) was, at first, friendly to whites. But in 1862, soldiers executed several members of his family. He turned hostile and, for nearly ten years, terrorized whites in the Arizona territory. Cochise' attacks were brilliantly conceived and savage. After the Civil War, U.S. troops moved against him in force. Cochise surrendered in 1871. When he was ordered to take his tribe to a reservation in New Mexico, he refused and escaped to Mexico with a few hundred followers. The next year, at a peace conference, he agreed to take his Chiricahua people to a reservation in Arizona where he lived out his life. The Learning Guide to Fort Apache also contains sections on Benefits of the Movie, Possible Problems, Helpful Background, Discussion Questions, Links to the Internet, and Bridges to Reading. The Discussion Questions are divided into three categories: Subject Matter, Social-Emotional Learning, and Moral-Ethical Emphasis.
