Russia, War and Peace, Tolstoy

To give you a sense of how our Learning Guides can be used by teachers as lesson plans and by parents to supplement school curriculum or for homeschooling, we have set out below the first Possible Problems section of the Learning Guide to War and Peace.

Possible Problems: MINOR. This story is told from the Russian point of view. At the beginning of the film, Napoleon is referred to as the scourge of Europe. It is true that Napoleon's ambition led to war, death and destruction throughout most of Europe. However, Napoleon imposed, wherever he conquered, the benefits of the Napoleonic Code, improved educational opportunities, fair administration, etc. The Russian monarchy was reactionary and oppressive. It cared little for its people. The people of Russia resisted Napoleon because he was a foreign invader not because they loved the Tsar.

The Learning Guide to War and Peace also contains sections on Benefits of the Movie, Possible Problems, Helpful Background, Discussion Questions, Links to the Internet, and Bridges to Reading. The Discussion Questions are divided into three categories: Subject Matter, Social-Emotional Learning, and Moral-Ethical Emphasis.
