This movie is the classic film treatment of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings novel, The Yearling. The movie shows the swamps of Florida as a frontier society and highlights Jody's dilemma. It presents an excellent male role model in the character of his father played by Gregory Peck. It can introduce children to environmental sensitivity, prompting discussions with questions like "what is the best place for a wild animal?"

yearling

To give you a sense of how our Learning Guides can be used by teachers as lesson plans and by parents to supplement school curriculum or for homeschooling, we have set out below a paragraph from the Learning Guide to The Yearling.

Note also that Jody runs away from home and is saved by a friendly boat captain. You may want to discuss with your child the dangers of running away in today's world. Explain that Jody was fortunate to be rescued by a person who returned him to his family. That was not always the case then and it is not always the case now. Explain how running away subjects children to great risks (go into as much detail as you can without giving the child nightmares).

The Learning Guide to The Yearling also contains sections on Benefits of the Movie, Possible Problems, Helpful Background, Discussion Questions, Links to the Internet, and Bridges to Reading. The Discussion Questions are divided into three categories: Subject Matter, Social-Emotional Learning, and Moral-Ethical Emphasis.
